Darts Flights
Darts Flights are the wings or fins that form the rear of the dart and are designed to provide stability during flight. Whilst Flights do not generate lift they do help to keep the dart moving in straight line. Without them your dart would move in an erratic fashion.
You need to be aware of the different materials that Dart Flights are made from so that you can select the most appropriate ones for you and your game.
Soft Flights
Soft Flights are made of a flexible plastic folded into the flight shape. Adhesive is used to hold the dart flight in shape. One of the benefits of this type of design is that if the dart flight is torn during a game they can generally be temporarily repaired by holding the layers of plastic together until the glue has bonded gain. This is generally a short term fix and you will need to purchase a new set of flights. Another useful characteristic of the soft dart flight is that when struck by another dart the flight will usually bend out of the way without tearing. These flights are available in a wide variety of bright and attractive designs.
Hard Flights
Hard flights are made of a strong and stiff polyester plastic that resists being bent out of shape. Because the plastic they are made from is hard they tend to resist tearing however, if they do tear then they should be thrown away as they generally can not be repaired. Another characteristic of hard flights is that they do not flex when they are hit however, they do tend to “pop off” the dart shaft, which usually saves them from being torn when hit by another dart.
Nylon Flights
As their name suggests, nylon flights are made of ripstop nylon fabric. Consequently, these flights are by far the most durable of darts flight. The stiffness of the nylon dart flight varies according to the weight and type of fabric used by the manufacturer but they tend to be generally weigh somewhere between a Soft and Hard flights. Whilst these flights are hard wearing they do tend to get worn out at the front of the flight where it is inserted into the shaft of the dart. To avoid this wear resist removing and installing the darts flights too often. Because of the type of material Nylon Flights come in a wide variety of colors and designs so choosing at set that matches your personality should be easy!
Installing Your Dart Flights
When installing a new set of flights on your darts you must ensure that you carefully insert the flight onto the shaft of the dart to avoid bending the flight. Once properly installed the fins of the dart should be gently spread out so that they are evenly spread in a ‘cross’ like manner. This will ensure that your dart travels in a smooth and straight manner.
